In the weeds

Monday, June 30, 2008

In between the working, sleeping and endless jaw gnashing I managed to take some pictures. Not very many but at least there were one or two that I thought decent enough to share. On the plant that gave me two beautiful pink flowers a week ago appeared this white and lavender bloom.

And just for fun, here's a "Behind the Scenes at Heather Ink" photograph for you.

What a week!

Monday, June 16, 2008

Last week was such a whirlwind. I had a rush job for a new client and tons of work for my seasoned clients. I worked all weekend and straight into the week. By the time Wednesday rolled around I felt like I needed to start the day with a mimosa instead of coffee. The highlight of the week came on Thursday when we went to a party at the Playboy Mansion, and I must say, if you ever have the opportunity to go. GO. We had a great time.

Playboy Mansion

We arrived at the party a little early so we could see the property before it got dark. After coming in and having a cocktail we wandered around to the different areas. While Thomas was chatting to his colleagues about work I spotted a white peacock squawking at the guests and went over to take some pictures.

To my amazement there were about a dozen peacocks, white and blue hoping around the grounds between tree branches and buildings. Thomas came over to join me and we ventured down a little jungle path only to find more beautiful birds and tiny monkeys. There was monkey food, grapes and bananas, in buckets by the side of the path. The monkeys scurried over and ever-so-gently reached through the fence to take the grape from your fingers.

It was like we were in a hidden jungle forest in the middle of Beverly Hills.

We then went on a tour of the grounds, led by Lauren, where we saw the tennis courts, game house, guest house and the largest redwood grove in Southern California. Toward the end of the tour we ducked out and went and played with this beautiful lady, Nana.

She was so gentle and really had no interest in parting ways with Thomas. She groomed my hair and nibbled on his collar. She was a delight.

Enough for now... more tomorrow!

A weekend at home

Monday, June 9, 2008

Come play!

The weather was perfect this weekend, 72 and sunny with a slight breeze. In between working and cooking I tried to get outside as much as I could. I think the pups appreciated it!

Henry, waiting for action

I also found this little gem hanging out in one of my potted barrels. I planted them last year but they didn't do anything. I couldn't get them to bloom, I thought I was a calla lily failure, so I ripped them out. Or so I thought. There's about four new plants popping up and I'm so excited. What's better than a pink calla lily?

Here and there and everywhere, but really nowhere

Friday, May 30, 2008

I feel like I've been really busy recently but I don't know what I've been really busy doing. I haven't been taking photos, I haven't been blogging, maybe I've been working? I'm not sure. How does that happen? The days go by, I feel busy and accomplished but none of the things I like to do are done. I did though find these two gems sitting in my iPhoto stash. I took them last week but I think I neglected to go through my photos.

So now I'm off for a haircut and to get Thomas' watch fixed. (Well, not fixed, but get a link removed from the band. A few weeks ago I took it to the jeweler to have it made a little bigger and I thought adding two links would be better than just one. It's not.)

Café Crochet

Thursday, May 1, 2008

Nancy QueenMy fabulous sister, Nancy Queen, has just launched her fabulous new book, The Chicks with Sticks Guide to Crochet.Go get it. Now. It's worth it. If you're a seasoned crocheter it's a great addition to your collection. With over 30 patterns the book has everything from pullovers to tote bags and cardigans, vests and hats. If you're just a beginner the Guide to Crochet has great, no fear instructions that are straight to the point while having a sense of humor. You'll never get bored with The Chicks with Sticks!

Guide to Crochet

Of the 30 fun to work patterns, three are mine. I designed, as the resident California girl, the Surfer Chick Quick Cap, a fun fan-stitch hat. It really does work up fast and, of course looks adorable.

The Chicks' Felted Zebra Slippers are a creation of mine too. These soft and fuzzy slip-ons are all single crochet so that makes them perfect for beginners.

And my personal favorite, Heather's Cafe Cardigan. This top-down raglan cardi totally fun to make, especially while you're sipping coffee at the corner cafe. If you're anything like me that caffeine buzz will have you finishing this in no time!

Summer is here

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

There's only two seasons here in Southern California, warm and warmer. Warm starts in mid-October and lasts through mid-March. Warmer lasts the other seven to eight months of the year. I didn't realize it was warmer season already, but what do you know, I have my first sunburn! It was 78 and perfect in Santa Monica yesterday.

The Junior Prom Pre-party went off without a hitch. All reports show that everybody came, ate and had a good time. I can't believe how grown up everyone looks, especially Bradley. Not only does March add insult to injury by making me turn 29, it also brings along a junior prom and an adorable girl-toting tuxedo-clad nephew making me feel even older.

Working breakfast

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

It's not the easiest thing to keep typing over, but when I have a lot of emails to send or work to do I like to eat at my desk. Lately we've been having a soft boiled egg, homemade wheat bread soldiers for dipping, homemade lemon curd and a banana for health.

Was a sleep deprived college student

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Shortly after we bought our home in Southern California, Thomas's mum and sister came to visit. Mum was excited to help us hang pictures and get organized, Emily had just finished finals and was ready to hit the beach and relax. The sleeping options were not ideal for accommodating two people that didn't want to sleep in the same bed. As Mum is a light sleeper she automatically received the spare room on the cool, dark, west facing side of the house for her quarters.

Emily, being a sleep-until-two-in-the-afternoon type of sleeper, was relegated to the sleeper sofa in the living room, which is not a 'room' in our house. It should really be called the 'living space' because it's just one huge room that encompasses everything in our home minus the bed. It has the front door, back door, sofa, television, club chairs, dining table, dining chairs, bookcase and oh, the entire kitchen. Needless to say, Emily didn't have much, how do I say this? ...Privacy.

As if the sun smiling at her over our panoramic eastern view was not enough to make Emily annoyed at six in the morning, surely her bellowing brother could do the trick. Each morning he would leap out of bed at the first glint of sun and rush to put the kettle on for the first pot of tea. Just as he would crest the living space threshold he would let out a deep, booming, "GOOOOOOOOD MORNING!", instantly startling Emily awake and unable to get back to sleep.

More tired than when she had arrived, Emily was less than pleased with Thomas. That of course made Thomas only more pleased with his accomplishment. Now four years down the road Emily is yet again suffering from extreme lack of sleep only this time there is not an insanely loud older brother, but a sweet little girl at the tail end of the problem. Emily has married and had a daughter. I'm certain baby Annabella, true to family history, loves to unleash her loudest voice to get the attention of her mother, albeit for drastically different reasons.

Somewhere in between naps Emily has started a blog showcasing her beautiful girl and fabulous photography. Check it out, here.

: :: ::: :: :

And, on a slight side note to the story, this was the trip when Mum and Emily found this little bundle of joy. Something that gave me many sleepless nights, but will forever give us huge smiles.
